The inspiration for building a vineyard on this site, all began when visiting Catherine’s family home at Upper Maffra West. Catherine’s father Keith, a dairy farmer of some 42 years on the property , wanted an idea for utilising the infertile ground that he could not irrigate. The "hill" as it was commonly referred to, had an ideal north facing slope, and so the possibility of growing grapes was a topic always under much discussion.

When playing cards late one night the solution presented itself. Catherine's husband, Alistair, had always harboured a dream of one day working his own vineyard. The two dreams were then brought together in 2004 when the first grapevine was planted. Keith ’s vision of a rich fertile producing paddock and Alistairs dream to own a vineyard were the common denominators in establishing “Blue Gables”.

The name “Blue Gables” originates from the new home Catherine and Alistair built alongside the vineyard. Its roof-line has many blue gables to its structure.
